Includes prints, mounted prints, photonegatives, and slides detailing the construction of the Cobb Building (1891-1893), the Bookstack Building (1981-1982), and the 1983-1985 Cobb Building renovation. There are also exterior shots and aerial views documenting the Library's exterior over its one-hundred year history and showing interior rooms in the 1890's, 1900's, 1920's, 1940's, 1960's, 1970's and 1980's.

The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Newberry (1804-68), which left what later amounted to approximately $2.2 million for the foundation of a “free, public” library on the north side of the Chicago River, if his two children died without issue.
